I was 25 years old, healthy, handsome, athletic, and living life to its fullest. I was tackling a university degree, a part-time job as a personal trainer, and competitive kickboxing training. One day, while I was in the changing room, a training partner commented on a "bleached" spot of skin on my shoulder. I checked in the mirror, and indeed there was a spot of skin which was lighter than the rest.

 However, I didn't think too much about it. One week later, I noticed that it had grew a bit, but again I didn't worry too much. I thought maybe it was a temporary allergic reaction to something…

 A few days later, I woke up to find a similar white spot - this time under my lips. Now I was worried. I rushed to my doctor…

My doctor calmly told me that it was nothing to worry about - the discoloration was a result of a condition called Vitiligo. He assured me that it was not harmful to my overall health, and that it was not contagious. However, he told me that it was likely that the white spots will keep growing in number and size…not something you want to hear especially when you're 25 years old!! He referred me to a dermatologist to discuss treatment options.
I got an appointment with a dermatologist about two weeks later, and by this time the spots had grew some more. The dermatologist explained the treatment options in detail, and she told me upfront that all the treatments were fairly expensive, and no treatment could be 100% guaranteed to work. There was no way I could afford to pay several thousands of dollars for surgery, de-pigmentation, excimer laser, or UV therapy, so I opted for topical corticosteroid treatment…
After four months, my vitiligo was still spreading and I was getting daily migraines, so I stopped the corticosteroids. To make a long story short, for the next year I also tried immunomodulators and topical psoralen therapy, but neither did anything to improve my skin condition…
I stopped working as a personal trainer, because nobody was hiring me anymore (I guess people thought I had some weird contagious fungus and they weren't too keen on getting close to me). I was getting weird looks everywhere I went, and I started avoiding going out. I stopped practicing sports and my social life was inexistent. When summer rolled around, I felt like I was at an all-time low. Previously, I was a proper beach bum; now, there was no way I was going to wear a swim-suit!
